Beyond their ethnic, political and regional divides, people unite together around their national football team. We saw the First Lady of Gabon dancing like an excited schoolgirl every time one of the eleven players of the ‘Azingo Nationale' scored a goal and became “the Panthers” for their country. The people of Equatorial Guinea were ecstatic with the qualification of their national team, languishing in the midst of one of the most ferocious dictatorships. According to Human Rights Watch, journalists who have visited the country to report on the human rights situation have been…

  • A Poem... for Libya

    12 May 2012 | 11:27 am
Two weeks after the February 17th uprising began in Libya I visited a good friend. We talked about what was going on and she confided that she'd been inspired to write a poem. She retrieved the paper that she'd written the poem and read it to me and then put the paper carefully away. Later, after I had gone home, she hid the poem, secreting it away so well that she forgot where she put it. Recently she came across it again and rewrote it for me, presenting it to me as a gift, rolled into a scroll and tied with a thin, red satin ribbon. She gave me permission to publish it…

I'm a disgruntled LTT customer. Their service is horrible and I am fed up to here and then some. Because of where I live I am stuck with having only Wimax available... which is pretty sad considering I'm only about a 20 minute drive to the centre of Tripoli, and just five minutes away from the university. Who is to blame? Those who ran things in the past, or the present?I haven't had internet service for the past four days. Sometimes the little icon indicator says there is service (when there really isn't), but mostly the little icon shows up with a yellow triangle with an exclamation point…

But of course before that can happen there will be major drama in my house. Sigh... you'd think I was asking to take a trip to the moon. It's been three years since I've been 'home'. I guess that's once in a blue moon. ... Mr Full Moon.... sigh....

I found a few that were interesting so I thought I'd share them with you. The first few are pictures of my husband's aunt's home in the heart of Suk Juma. She lives in a very old house that was built by the Turks during the Ottoman Empire. The house has an open-air central courtyard surrounded by rooms and living areas. The picture below is the view of the courtyard looking out of my husband's aunt's room. She says that when she got married she came to live in this room. All her children were born in…

  • What is missing?

    8 May 2012 | 9:13 am
Yes, what is missing? We asking ourselves many times. We miss this and that in our lives, even if we appear to have it all. We never stop wanting and yearning and wanting and, and, but lately I have discovered that the one thing that if we lose our lives would become an empty dark hollowness. If that thing goes out the door, then the rest will queue for the window. There is only this one thing that is so precious and it is HEALTH. Take care of it before you lose it, trust me.

    25 Apr 2012 | 9:57 am
Two days ago, 4/23/12, I received the sad news of the passing away of my dear aunt. She was the youngest and my late father's favorite sister. She was very close to me as I spent most of my childhood and teenage-hood in her house. Her house was near my school and during school recesses I would go to her house for something to eat, as she was a great cook, and to spend some time talking to her or playing with one of her cats (she always had few). If the next subject after the recess was history or geography or better still military training, I would skip it and stay at my aunt's house. She…

For a long time I have not posted anything about the progress of my book(s) and plans of publishing, etc. The reason(s) is (are) so diverse, some due to what was going on in Libya last year, as I spent it, almost all of it, glued to the TV and computer with few breaks for food, sleep and ahem, ahem, personal hygiene. This year started on more positively and things are going well but as it is very stressful to be moving houses (moving to the cutest house ever with original fireplace and all) it is double stressful to be moving houses and country as well. Yesterday Mike's Mom and I headed downtown to check out the new Benghazi Art Gallery.  Most of the art on display at the exhibit is from Ali Wak Wak a local resident of Benghazi who for the past 9 months has created many different pieces from left over materials and metal from the Revolution.  Old tank parts, shells, rifles, guns, crashed airplane pieces. . you name it he uses it! They are pretty amazing and he is so creative with the bits and bobs that he has used.  Prior to the revolution he was using palm roots to create his magical masks. If you are in Benghazi head down…
